About the site

Croydon occupies a special place in the psyche of not only the people who live there, but in the nation as a whole. It’s been lauded; it’s been derided; it’s even been stolen by space aliens*.

Much has been written about the sociopolitical aspects of Croydon, its architecture, its repeated failure to achieve city status. But very little has been written about the shops, the pubs and the cinemas that have since vanished into the past.

So this little blog is going to do just that. Focussing primarily on the 1970s and 1980s, we will explore Croydon’s recent but under-documented past, with a bias towards those long-lost businesses who did their best to separate you from your hard-earned cash.
